Bargain-hunters were trying to take advantage of a giant store closing sale that had nearly everything on the shelves at 50% off. "Right now in this economy I think this is was what we ought to do to get food on the table", said Dawn Quintero who was standing in line outside the store Wednesday morning. Store management would not let your Central Coast News inside the store to get the mad rush down the isles and at the cash registers. The Vons corporate office says the Ocean Avenue store, which years ago was a Williams Brothers Market, is closing because it is under-performing. "I guess the economy is closing it down", says Vons regular Carolyn Bergeson, "you know this is the only grocery store on this side of town, what about people with no cars?" Vons says all of its employees at the Ocean Avenue store have been offered jobs at the other Vons in town over on H Street or at other Vons stores in Santa Maria. Its going to be a long way to go for those Vons shoppers who've come to call the Ocean Avenue store their home away from home. "Its a bummer", says longtime Vons regular Patricia Carriedo, "now I have to go all way across town to get my groceries." |
